Sunland North ballot stuffing

In an undisclosed garage in Sunland North, several volunteers got together on Friday, August 5, to stuff envelopes full of material for the Sunland Division 17 Annual Member Meeting on September 14. While that seems a long way away, we are using mail-in ballots for our Board election and other association decisions this year, and we want to make sure everyone gets their ballots, votes, and mails the ballots back in time to be counted before the annual meeting.

There are nine pages of information, with every page but one printed double-sided. You can expect to see them in your mailbox starting the week of August 7. Please return the ballot and quorum form (the only page printed on a yellow sheet) as soon as possible.

If you live in the Sequim area and don’t get a ballot by August 15, please contact me and I will check into the matter. Out-of-area members should contact me if they don’t receive anything by August 24.

I wish to thank George Bannon, Ronnie Bannon, Rindy Hainstock, Wende Ang, Bob Eifant, Susan Hamman and Tom Hamman for their invaluable help in assembling the meeting packets, placing mailing labels on everything, and then checking the packets to make sure we hadn’t missed anyone. And thank you, Wende, for documenting our work.

Bees

Sara Miller, our Natural Habitat Coordinator, received a question about bees.

“I’m responding to [a] question about the feasibility of leaving part of the natural habitat area unmowed to provide flowers and food for the bees. You might have noticed that we don’t often mow the natural area. Typically, we mow it three times a year. There are often many flowering plants present by the time we do mow, and those  provide good food for the pollinators. We try to time the mowing so that we are able to 1) ensure that the biomass present in the grass doesn’t risk providing fuel in case of fire and 2) eliminate blooms of any noxious weeds before they are able to set seed. We have poison hemlock in our natural area and one mitigation measure includes properly timed mowing.

I appreciate [the] suggestion… about trying to help the bees, and I’m certain they do benefit from the wild flowers that grow in our tall grasses.”

Sunland North beautification assistance requested

The local irrigation district gave Sunland North several trees to plant along our border with Woodcock Road. These young trees get thirsty during the dry months, and volunteers are needed for July and September (other months are covered).

Volunteers are also needed to do trash cleanup along Sequim-Dungeness Way and along Woodcock Road on Monday, June 6. Meet at Woodcock and Blakely at 10 am. Trash bags will be provided, please bring gloves. If you have a high-visibility vest, please wear it. We will have a standing volunteer day for trash cleanup on the first Monday of each month.

Contact me at information@sunlandnorth.org to volunteer for either opportunity, or to dispose of the collected garbage if you have any room in your trash can.

Sunland North Natural Habitat Committee

Finishing work on roundabout

Work has restarted on the Sequim-Dungeness Way — Woodcock Road roundabout. The work is projected to last from April 27 through May 5, depending on weather, recalcitrant Canada geese, and maybe an invasion of militant gerbils. There may be traffic delays.

If you want to avoid the construction, the attached map (based on Google Maps) shows three different paths into and out of Sunland North:

Yellow — take a right on Woodcock Road to the first intersection, turn left (north) on Taylor Ranch Road, and you will end up on Sequim-Dungeness Way heading north. From there you can continue on to Anderson Road, Three Cays Road-Old Olympic Highway, and, eventually, Port Angeles. Or, in reverse order, reach here.

Red — take a right on Woodcock Road and continue as it loops south to Holland Road. From there you can reach Port Williams Road, where turning right (west) will take you into Sequim, or turning left (east) will take you to Schmuck Road and, possibly, a herd of elk.

Green — head south and up Blakely Blvd to upper Sunland. Turn west (right) onto Fairway Drive, and it will loop around to end at Taylor Road. Take a right on Taylor and that will take you to Sequim-Dungeness Way and, eventually, Sequim.

Above all, exercise patience.
