Entrance sign update

Hi Neighbors,

As many of you have noticed, the letters on our entrance sign are biting the dust and falling off the entrance structure. Today I removed the remaining letters. We are in the process of getting bids for a new sign so you should see a big improvement in the near future.

Last week Kathy and I pulled all the weeds and trimmed the bushes in the entrance gardens. And speaking of flowers, (we were?) Kathy has picked out an assortment of flowers for the entrance gardens. She is waiting for the temperature of the soil to get a little warmer (do remember warmer temperatures?) before she plants them. Hopefully this weekend.

And speaking of this weekend, the forecast is for sunny weather with the temperatures in the 60’s!  So grab your sunscreen and get out and enjoy the sun while you can!!

Storm cleanup Monday, January 17

January 13, 2022

A reminder for potential volunteers who would like to participate in the branch cleanup happening next Monday, January 17. Meet at Blakely & Woodcock Road at 10 am with gloves, chainsaws, pruning saws, and other implements of destruction to help load up storm debris for transport to Cascade Bark. I think the weather may have scared everyone; there’s still lots of room for more volunteers!

Roof and gutter leaks

January 3, 2022

Unfortunately, but as expected, the recent snow, freezing temp and now the thaw have resulted in a number of roof leaks, gutter leaks and gutter overflows (including my own gutters.) I have contacted the recommended roofing contractor and I am attempting to get us on a priority schedule to deal with the roof leaks. Gutter leaks will require better weather conditions but they are on the list for repair. Some of the gutters were blocked with ice and hopefully as the ice melts the overflows will cease.

Roof gutters, snow and ice

December 29, 2021

Due to the unusual weather conditions, our gutters are blocked with snow and ice. This will likely lead to overflow conditions which will refreeze on entrances and walkways creating a safety issue. With rising temperatures within the next few days, the gutters should be back to normal. However, the weather conditions may also cause ice dams to form around roof vents, possibly creating leaks.

As you may expect, none of the contractors are working this week, but if there is a leak report, it will be on the short list of items to be taken up with our roofing contractor. Meanwhile, be careful around your entrances and walkways.

How to prevent your pipes from freezing

December 27, 2021

It will be below freezing all week, which is unusual for the area. You might want to look at this excellent article from Consumer Reports on how to mitigate the problem. You don’t need to subscribe to Consumer Reports to read the article:

My thanks to Mike Johnson, Sunland North Member-at-Large, for referring the article to me.

Snow and cold

December 22, 2021

While it is pleasant right this second, the National Weather Service forecasts that we will have rain off and on for the rest of the week, and from Friday night through early next week, we have a chance of snow. Not much snow (possibly no snow at all, possibly an inch or two), but a chance.

What we will have, without question, is colder weather, with freezing weather, and a projected low of 15 degrees by Monday. Please bring in any potted plants and other weather-sensitive items, and make sure outside faucets are turned off, hoses brought in, and stray hazards removed from walkways and patios.

Yes, this does mean there is a chance we will have a white Christmas.

Keeping our homes safe and costs down

October 26, 2021

This morning I walked for over an hour through our neighborhood.

I decided that while I was getting exercise I would check the status of the hose bibbs. Winter is sneaking up on us and I certainly did not want a repeat of frozen water pipes we experienced several years ago. I managed to walk 6245 steps. Burned 683 calories

I met new homeowners,  spoke with other residents and disconnected several dozen hoses from our house bibbs.. Several of the hose bibbs were turned on.

Please talk with your neighbors, if possible help them. If you need help disconnecting your hose bibb, please let me know. My service is free. I will do whatever I can to keep your and my HOA insurance costs down.

best regards,

High wind advisory

October 23, 2021

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind advisory, effective from now through 6 a.m. Monday. A large cyclonic storm off the Pacific Coast may bring high winds, power outages, and wind-blown debris, with gusts from 35 to 50 mph.

Please secure outdoor furniture, pets, and loved ones, and anything else that might become airborne.

Cold weather and wind

Cold weather and hoses

This week the weather is projected to dip to near freezing, which means it is time to remove your garden hoses from outside faucets and bring them into the garage. Even a mild freeze can freeze water in garden hoses, causing water to back up inside your home, freeze, and split pipes. This can cause very extensive, and expensive, damage.

Please check your outside faucets and remove all hoses. Your floors, rugs, furniture, and other possessions will appreciate it.

Additionally: think about moving inside fuchsias and other flowers that I have trouble spelling.

Wind

For those who may be new to the area, Sequim gets plenty of sunshine, and generally mild weather in spring, summer, fall, and winter. But Sequim also gets wind.

The wind doesn’t need a messy stormfront with clouds and rain and thunder. The area can have a clear-skies windstorm that reaches 40-50 mph or more. Windstorms are particularly common in the fall and early winter.

With this in mind, please think about how you can secure chairs, tables, toys, relatives, and anything else that the wind might pick up and toss against your home or car or passing neighbor. Last fall, I was hit by a plastic flower pot that came sailing through the air from somewhere to the west.
